The best distribution of Linux for you depends on what you like to do and what you use your computer for, Xandros, Kubuntu, and Ubuntu are all top choices at the time being. I personally would pick Kubuntu or Xandros for a beginner, they'll both allow you to "easily" dual-boot with your old Windows system still intact so you don't have to make the full transition all at once. Almost any Linux distribution you get will allow you the use unpartitioned space on your hard-drive for the new install, and the kernel won't take up much space anyways (compared to your Windows counterpart thats assured). To answer your question about Linux being better then Windows; this is really a personal opinion. Linux will provide you with ease of use and greater security levels, and the fact that it is open-source is a major benefit to the end-user. In close, I recommend that you continue to use your old Windows desktop along with a new Linux distribution to ensure program use-ability and functionality. Welcome to the penguin's side.

You feel like a candle in a hurricane
Just like a picture with a broken frame
Alone and helpless like you’ve lost your fight
But you’ll be alright, you’ll be alright
