I'm assuming that you have a cable modem already, just get a wireless router from Linksys (wireless would work better for your sake really, I prefer hard-wired connections though) for about $50.00 to $60.00 dollars. The router will have both hard-wired and wireless capabilities on it. Companies have cheaper makes out there for routers (i.e. D-Link), but you really don't wanna go cheap when security (wireless and firewall) and connectivity is on the line. You might need some cat-5e (Ethernet) cables too if you do want to hard-wire this up.

P.S. Since a wireless connection can be read from anyone who has a wireless capable computer within the vicinity (i.e. laptops), security is needed for a wireless connection. This of course is usually only a problem in an urban community though. If a "hacker" jumps onto your connection they are basically using up your own bandwidth (slow down) and money.

Considering the computer is from the 20th century, you might also need a NIC (Network Interface Controller) card that will run right off a PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slot (This unless ofcourse you already have a etherport on the back of your computer to connect to; it might be built on your motherboard already). There are an assortment of brands that make these cards now, Etherlink from 3Com is a good buy though. They now usually come with the option of wireless connectivity built in, so you can run both hard-wired and wireless networks. Alltogether this wireless project should run you about $100.00-$150.00 dollars max. You can do it hard-wired for about $20 dollars less. Check out Newegg for good pricing.

yea like blad said i would concider the cable cuz u know its there and u feel more secure...if i unplugs somehow..u can just plug it in...wireless would be easier but if it goes down u have to do a whole lot of shit...i dont have wireless i have cable and its been really fast connecting...while my friend has wireless and it goes off alot...plus if it goes out all (2 or 3) computers go out..while if u hae cable..if 1 goes out u ahve another computer to go on =D but thats what i think

You should have one cable coming into your house right now that connects to a cable modem already, then a cord that goes to your main computer from that modem. Take out the cord that goes to your main computer and instead plug it into the router (different from cable modem) and out it into the WAP/Uplink plug in. The router will have about four (or more) extra plugs on the back of it. In one plug you will run a cord back to your main computer, and in another you will run a cord up to your computer on the third floor. It isn't that hard really.
